…his linking of Bhutto’s assassination with the Border Fence has raised more than a few uncomprehending eyebrows. Under attack from conservative choirmasters like Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter for being soft on brown people Rev Huckabee obviously feels compelled to mention illegal immigration at every opportunity.

Despite his huge surge with the Republican base (A phenomena Coulter typically blames the liberal media for) the Party Guardians are having none of it – proving once again that when they talk about Christian what they really mean is Roman. (“Only losers get thrown to lions!”)

As I said yesterday, the base may already be resigned to losing and focusing on Huckabee like he was an uncorrupted, Evangelical Jimmy Stewart type (see Mr Smith Goes to Washington ) bringing them honor as he fights the good fight against all odds.

I’m not sure the Republican pundits have quite figured this out. Coulter, for one, has thrown her support behind Mitt Romney. Both the conservative leaning Union Leader and Concord Monitor in New Hampshire have uniquely issued anti-endorsements, saying, basically, “anyone but that deceitful, two-faced phony Mitt Romney” which, I guess, explains Coulter’s identification with him as her dream candidate.
