Bill Donohue and his Catholic League finally discover who the real enemy is…

As an especially phlegmatic Irish Catholic myself, I have spent many years now screaming at Bill Donohue (on the tee vee) for many of the idiotic campaigns he has waged against secular society while cozying up to the more nutty elements of the evangelical movement.

I am delighted to see this morning that Bill’s Catholic League has turned it sights against St. John McCain for his cowtowing to the sinister Rev John Hagee, whose endorsement he has just received. Hagee no doubt sees McCain as the kind of Christian leader needed to destroy the world and convert the Jews (and the Catholics) in the process.

Donohue’s press release reads:

Yesterday, Senator John McCain said he was “very honored by Pastor John Hagee’s endorsement.” The Republican presidential hopeful also called Hagee “the staunchest leader of our Christian evangelical movement,” citing the minister’s pro-Israel stance.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue addressed this today:

“There are plenty of staunch evangelical leaders who are pro-Israel, but are not anti-Catholic. John Hagee is not one of them. Indeed, for the past few decades, he has waged an unrelenting war against the Catholic Church. For example, he likes calling it ‘The Great Whore,’ an ‘apostate church,’ the ‘anti-Christ,’ and a ‘false cult system.’ To hear the bigot in his own words, click here . Note: he isn’t talking about the Buddhists.

And:

Senator Obama has repudiated the endorsement of Louis Farrakhan, another bigot. McCain should follow suit and retract his embrace of Hagee.”

I am not sure that the Democrats even appreciate the window of opportunity here, but most elections in the US over the last few cycles have pivoted on the blue-collar ethnic Catholics (the so-called Reagan Democrats) along with, of course, the Latino community.

Bear in mind that St. McCain’s motto is “No Surrender”, the same Paisleyite call to arms that had kept Northern Ireland torn by sectarian violence for several centuries. By tying McCain to this narrow, bigoted brand of Ulster Protestantism, one could really make hay with the millions of Catholics who might otherwise see McCain as an avuncular “good guy”.

Naturally, I don’t expect to see the Democrats do anything of the kind.

Me and Bill Donohue might just have to do it ourselves…hehehe
